The Rotom Phone finally gets a second camera

The Rotom phone is getting a big update. Following its introduction in the Galar region three years agothe updated version of smartphone-which-is-inhabited-by-a-Pokémon finally makes the leap from one rear camera to two. The handset will be available soon in the new region of Paldea as well.

It’s hard to tell exactly what type the second lens is for – all I can really see is that the main lens remains blue while the new second lens is black. I don’t think that’s enough information to make an informed guess whether this new lens is a telephoto, an ultrawide or something else, although I hope to be able to use this second camera to take pictures of the new best boy fidough.

Beyond that, it looks like this new Rotom phone is a largely iterative upgrade over the previous one. A new feature is a mysterious glowing blue ring in the middle of the device. Maybe it’s for wireless charging? The ring is placed pretty much exactly where you would expect a wireless charging coil to be, after all. Although I don’t recall ever charging the Rotom phone in Galar, I guess it’s good that wireless charging might be an option while I’m in one of Paldea’s trainer schools.

Unfortunately, the big dots at the top and bottom of the Rotom phone have remained for this next generation. That means it’s probably still not comfortable slipping into your pocket, but at Paldea, backpacks seem to be all the rage “Guess I’ll have to get one for a place to put my phone.” (Maybe one day we’ll have a Rotom Phone Mini.)

No word on 5G support, which might make it easier to get in touch with your friends while you travel through Paldea. But I really hope the race for 5G doesn’t become a Paldea thing. as is the case in other regions.

The company that manufactures the Rotom Phone confirmed in a press release that the Pokédex and a map will be loaded on the device again. But we’ll have to wait and see what other new features might become available until we can try the new Rotom Phone for ourselves on November 18.
