“Nothing mattered to me but being honest to her.”
If you’re of a certain age, it’s very possible that you spent a good part of your teenage years watching the crazy ride that was A tree hill.
Breaking up is, of course, hard to do – but Chad and Sophia continued to work on the show for years, until the former left the show in 2009. At some point after their split, their characters (Lucas Scott and Brooke Davis, respectively) even dated on the show.
On a recent episode by Sophia theater queens podcast with alumni A tree hill costars Bethany Joy Lenz and Hilarie Burton, the actor made some rare comments about what it was like to continue working with his ex.
The conversation started when Bethany brought up how Sophia was “going through a breakup with the person you were playing romance to your face.”
“Regardless of all those circumstances, it’s incredibly difficult — emotionally, to be able to be vulnerable and to be there in that moment,” she told Sophia.
Bethany also said she thought it was “really beautiful” that Sophia could be “so raw and open and vulnerable” in her acting, despite the circumstances – to which Sophia replied: “People can call her as they like.”
“They can say it’s strength, they can say it’s pride, they can say it’s professionalism — you can put a positive or negative bias to it,” she continued.
“But I was always going to put Brooke Davis before everyone else and everything. Nothing mattered to me but being honest to her.”
It’s quite surprising that Sophia chose to talk about the experience at all. Last year, the actor said that she wouldn’t answer questions about Chad from now on.
During an appearance on the Inside You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Sophia said she was “not allowed” to talk about her marriage to Chad because “I tried to make fun of being a stupid kid, and every time I did that, it turns into I’m talking shit about someone I don’t even know anymore, who is clearly an adult.
“It just doesn’t work, so I’m not going to do it.
