5G spectrum auction: Jio has acquired spectrum on several bands.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio emerged as the biggest bidder for the 5G spectrumacquiring nearly half of all waves sold at the latest auction for Rs 88,078 crore.

According to Telecoms Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Adani Group bought 400 MHz, less than one percent of all spectrum sold, for Rs 212 crore.

While the Adani Group has purchased spectrum in the 26 GHz band, which is not intended for public networks, Jio has acquired spectrum in several bands, including the coveted 700 MHz band which can provide a signal range of 6 to 10 km and is a good basis for the fifth generation (5G) in the 22 circles of the country.

A single city dweller can cover more area if 700 Mhz is used.

Bharti Airtel, from telecommunications tycoon Sunil Bharti Mittal, has bought a 19,867 MHz radio wave on various bands for Rs 43,084 crore.

Vodafone Idea Ltd bought spectrum for Rs 18,784 crore.

A total of Rs 150,173 crore bids were received, Vaishnaw said.

Of the 72,098 MHz of spectrum offered on 10 bands, 51,236 MHz, or 71%, has been sold.

The government, he said, will in the first year receive a payment of Rs 13,365 crore for the spectrum.

He also said 5G services could be launched by October.
