Android 13 bedtime mode; New UI, dark wallpapers

For Android 13, Google has redesigned the look of Bedtime mode offered by Digital Wellbeing, while adding a rather useful “Dim the wallpaper” option.

The changes start with Bedtime mode with a new Material You preference UI on Android 13 for easier setup and management. After opening from settings or Digital Wellbeing “app” shortcut, you will come across the new card-based list.

The first card shows the current state of Bedtime Mode with a quick “Enable Now” button. When activated, there is a cute animation (with a CAT) and two options: “Power off for now” and “Pause for 30 min”.

“Bedtime Routine” is the following map: use a schedule (user interface at the same time as before), turn on while charging, or none (for manual control).

“Customize” is the last section, with “Do not disturb for Bedtime mode” and “Disable Bedtime mode on next alarm” unchanged from before. New is a “Bedtime Screen Options” with:

  • Shades of grey
  • Keep screen dark: Disable always-on display
  • Darken wallpaper
  • Dark theme

Having Bedtime mode darkens your wallpaper to be darker is very useful and produces some particularly interesting looks with the Pixel 6a nature swept away collection.

Version 1.1.463639936.beta (409068), widely deployed yesterday on the beta channelactive (h/t Mishaal Rahman) this new wallpaper gradation option. Us first previewed option in May. Meanwhile, Android 13’s redesign of Bedtime Mode appears to have gone live in mid-July, if not earlier. The redesign does not appear on the Android 12 Pixel phones we checked today.
