Twitter reacts to Ana de Armas’ accent in ‘Blonde’

“At the risk of offending those who are more concerned with language than substance, Norma Jean did not have a Spanish accent. Ana De Armas has it in the trailer. the other way,” read one of the tweets. “Yet another example of an actor not making his character believable because of his accent. I don’t want to pretend that Marilyn Monroe was Hispanic just so Ana de Armas could work. And by the way, I love Ana but it was a huge casting failure,” another wrote.

“I know the movie isn’t out yet but Blonde starring Ana de Armas looks gorgeous and the scenes give me chills but I know you still hear her accent… like it’s LOUD. I am very surprised they thought she looked like Marilyn because she literally doesn’t look? Yeah,” one fan tweeted. “I’m so torn about this. I love Ana de Armas, but her accent really takes me out of the trailer, which isn’t entirely her fault. It doesn’t really affect me. I’m definitely going to watch, maybe it’s better in context,” one fan remarked.

“Too bad Ana de Armas was so candid about working 9 months on Marilyn’s accent because otherwise she could just claim it was an artistic choice and I know Filmtt and half the critics would accept that” , reads one of the comments. “Everyone seems obsessed with Ana de Armas’ accent in BLONDE, but I think that just makes the movie more interesting; it emphasizes the inherent artifice of biopics (and acting in general), which I think is appropriate in a work seemingly dedicated to the exploration of artifice versus reality,” a fan explained.

“I love Ana de Armas but I have to admit I’m skeptical of her role as Marilyn Monroe… Her accent is still pretty obvious in everything I’ve seen her. It’s not like Nicole Kidman or Saoirse Ronan who can completely disguise their native accent,” one fan shared.
